Bourgas during the centuries
The 4-th tourist city in Bulgaria has 13-th century history. It was sattle as small fishermen village in 3-rd century. It occupies the east part of Bulgarian beach front – some 25 km. On its territory are set many industrial factories. But the main goal is tourist industry. Burgas Airport occupies a very good location - here is the large number of sunny days per year in Europe. It provides reliable air transport to all over the Euport. On its territory are set many tourist offices and car hire providers as well. It was taken first place for the length of the runway (3,200 m) on the Balkan Peninsula for a long time, but after the expansion of airports of Sofia and Athens, it is third place now. Each year, the Burgas airport serves more than 2 million passengers. The get to the beach resorts by bus or by car rental.
History of Burgas airport begins back in 1927 when the French company " Cidna " (now Air France) signed contract with the Government of Bulgaria on its construction and use. In 1941, the airport was given to Bulgaria. In 1947 was started regular flights Sofia -Burgas , and in the 1970s it became an international airport of Burgas . The last expansion was made in 2013 by the German company Fraport, which since 2006 took Burgas Airport at concession and pledged to invest in it 400 millions €. The new terminal covers all the requirements of the entry of Bulgaria into the Schengen area .
History of the city of Burgas begins with prehistoric times. Even in ancient times fertile soil of Burgas lowlands flowing through it rivers, lakes , the sea , proximity to the Strandja and Stara Planina mountains provided favorable conditions for the life of prehistoric tribes.
In the 10th century the land of Burgas again fall under the influence of Byzantium and development of cities and fortresses Aqua Calidae, Rusokastro, Markeli , etc was accelerated. After the uprising of the brothers Peter and Asen in 1185 Burgas land often change hands . We can mention the battle of Skafida in 1304 when the Bulgarian Tsar Theodore Svetoslav defeated the Byzantine army and restores the Bulgarian authorities and the battle of Rusokastro in 1332 when Tsar Ivan Alexander conquered this territory from the Byzantines , who appropriated it using the death of Tsar Michael Shishman in 1330.
All these attractions can be seen with your own eyes visiting the city of Burgas and its surroundings. This is easy to do on a plane arriving at the airport of Burgas , which is 10 km from the center in Sarafovo, even by car hire taken from the centre of the city.
