Burgas region occupies a special place in the history of the Bulgarian lands in the Middle Ages . There have passed Goths, Huns , Avars and Slavs in their devastating march towards the land of Southern Thrace in 4-6 centuries . Unable to stop the barbarian tribes on the Danube River in the late 5th century Byzantine Empire creates grandiose system of fortresses and walls on the slopes of the Stara Planina Mountain . After the establishment of the Bulgarian state in 681 Burgas region is the scene of all the big fights of the Bulgarian rulers with the Byzantine Empire. Victory of Khan Tervel in Anchialo in 708 and Khan Kardam at Markeli fortress in 792 finally claim the prestige of the Bulgarian state and the great victories of Khan Krum in the early 9th century led to the construction of border Erkesia shaft , indicating the southern border of Bulgaria. At the fortress of Debelt, near where Erkesia began , was the custom between Bulgaria and Byzantium , through which was delivering annual tributefrom Konstantinopols emperors to Bulgarian khans and kings . Top of Bulgarian rule over the Byzantine Empire became Aheloy battle in 917 when Tsar Simeon completely destroyed the Byzantine army .
